Even so, the growing phase produced plenty of useful information. Some upgrades proved their value immediately, while a few recurring problems made it clear where the next round needs to improve.
What Worked Well
The controller, quieter exhaust, light meter, and condensate pump made the room easier to manage and its behavior easier to inspect. Rebalancing electrical loads and adding tent support bars also improved the setup.
The pumped top-feeding halos and reabsorption from the bases worked well enough to keep developing. Five-gallon pots were manageable, and pruning below the net appeared promising. The final flower weight is 17.0 oz (roughly 482 g). I still need a consistent basis before comparing it with other grows.
Seed soaking went well in this run. I plan to keep it in the process, while recognizing that this was not a controlled comparison.
AI-assisted data entry and site development reduced administrative work. The next improvement is consistency: keep the record accurate and finish the design rather than repeatedly changing direction.
Pink Banana Runtz-Specific Learnings
The grow appears to have produced two distinct phenotypes, with noticeably different reactions to similar conditions. That variation has made the grow more interesting, but it also complicates the process of drawing clean conclusions from the data.
It may ultimately push me toward exploring clones for the next grow. Starting with consistent genetics would make it easier to determine whether differences are being caused by the environment, my decisions, or the plants themselves.
Overall, Pink Banana Runtz was fantastic to grow, and my experience with these Dutch Passion plants was positive. There was nothing especially dramatic or temperamental about the strain. The biggest problems were related to environmental control rather than the genetics.
I was not blown away by the size of the buds. They never seemed to fill out substantially and are airier than I’d like, even with a final flower weight of 17.0 oz (roughly 482 g). Still, ease of cultivation is worth a great deal. A strain that behaves predictably and does not create unnecessary problems has real value, especially when the grow already contains plenty of other variables.
These are tremendously resinous buds. That describes what I can see; I’ll wait until after the cure to judge potency.
At this stage, Pink Banana Runtz looks like a strong success: easy to grow, tremendously resinous, and genetically interesting without being difficult.
What Needs Improvement
The most important recurring nutrient issue is a potential calcium and magnesium blind spot in my combination of FoxFarm Ocean Forest soil and General Hydroponics supplements. Late-stage symptoms have appeared across multiple grows now, making the pattern difficult to dismiss. I need to address calcium and magnesium management more deliberately in the next run.
My current lights are another limiting factor. Their output is not as uniform across the canopy as I would like, and the compromises become more obvious as I collect better measurements. I would prefer to use a bar-style array for the next grow, and there is an AC Infinity model I have my eye on.
Maneuverability inside and around the tent remains frustrating—especially the inability to access the plants easily from every side. Some of that is a tent-layout problem, but much of it is simply imposed by the dimensions of the room. I may not be able to eliminate the issue, though I should still look for ways to reduce its impact.
Timing was probably the biggest weakness of this grow. I went on vacation during one of its most consequential periods. In my defense, the schedule had already been pushed back by an earlier failure to launch the grow, but the experience reinforced how important calendar planning is.
If travel is unavoidable, the beginning of a grow is clearly preferable to the end. The middle can also be risky depending on watering cadence, but late flower leaves very little room for error or delayed responses.
Finally, pH control continues to feel either problematic or onerous. It is manageable, but it demands more attention than I would prefer and remains a recurring source of uncertainty. I’m interested in exploring living soil for a future grow, provided I can develop a straightforward approach. Growers often cite reduced pH management as one of its advantages, which makes it especially appealing to me.
Looking Ahead
The broad takeaway is that the grow environment is becoming more capable, measurable, and automated. The controller, exhaust system, light meter, condensate pump, improved electrical layout, tent supports, and watering setup all made meaningful contributions.
The next gains will likely come from solving the less convenient problems: improving light uniformity, planning around travel, addressing the recurring calcium and magnesium issue, and making the plants easier to access.
The two apparent Pink Banana Runtz phenotypes also raise an interesting question about whether clones would produce a more controlled and informative next grow.
